Agar, along with his handler Sgt. Chris Heycock, graduated from the Bergen County Sheriff's Office Canine Training Academy in 2017 with certifications in patrol and narcotics detention, police said.
"Agar and Sgt Heycock stopped by our home not long ago to visit our toddlers and talk about how important police dogs are," said one mourner. "Agar was a sweet and gentle dog - and tough when he needed to be. We will miss him and be thinking of Sgt Heycock."
The K-9 was known for his ability to track and was responsible for locating and apprehending countless people, police said.
"Please keep Sgt Heycock and his family in your thoughts and prayers," police said. "Agar is gone but will not be forgotten."
